Richard-Toll is a fairly large town that has seen its population increase tenfold thanks to the growth of the sugar industry. An arid road lined with bushes and thorns, and then, all of a sudden: Richard-Toll! At the Rosso junction, gateway to Mauritania, fonio fields, potatoes and banana plantations appear... But the eye is especially caught by the sugar cane plantations and rice fields of a surrealist green. In Wolof, Richard-Toll means "Richard's field", named after a French botanist, Jean-Michel Richard, Baron Roger's gardener who, in the 1820s, tried in vain to farm in the region.
