In 1859, Faidherbe decided to transform the Kassak marsh to supply water to Saint-Louis. 17 km of pipes were built and the pumping machine was operational in 1885. The plant, which operated for several years, was finally decommissioned in 1952. Today, only ruins remain... but what ruins! Those who are sensitive to industrial art must make the detour to discover the oldest steam engines in Black Africa. To get there, take the road leading to the Djoudj park. We pass the village of Ndiawdoune, and the track to Makhana is signposted at the arrival of Mbarigot, after the road to the dam.
