Rosso is the main gateway to and from Senegal: to do so, the crossing of the river is done by motorized dugout canoe, or by taking a ferry. As a link between Mauritania and Senegal, Rosso played an important role during the colonial era, so much so that at the time of Mauritania's independence, Moktar Ould Daddah, then president, failed to choose Rosso as the country's capital. He preferred Nouakchott, as the latter was more neutral. On November 30, 2021, the first stone of the Rosso bridge, which will link Senegal to Mauritania by the end of 2024, was laid. A major project that will strengthen trade between the 2 countries.
