The Djoudj Park is the third largest bird sanctuary in the world! Populated by hundreds of species of birds, the site is crossed by a large river, which then flows into the Senegal River. But beware, the park is only populated in an interesting way with the massive arrival of migratory birds from Western Europe, meaning that you will only really enjoy it from December to April, with a peak in January and February. Outside of this period, bird enthusiasts will be able to observe migratory birds from South Africa during the wintering period, such as the white-throated bee-eater. But this is only a tiny fraction, as 80% of the species are western migrants. More than 360 species have been recorded and nearly 3 million birds in total! The pink flamingos, by the hundreds, like pelicans, king ibis and so many others, offer a grandiose spectacle, even without being a fan of ornithology. You may also see some gazelles (dorcas), warthogs, jackals, Nile lizards, crocodiles and pythons, provided you keep your feet and eyes on the ground. The park, created in 1971, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. To get the most out of it, you can sleep there and plan two days to enjoy the view
