It's the village at the end of the road, favored by many for its tranquil, baba-cool atmosphere, its animist beliefs that are still very much alive, and its magnificent beach that runs alongside the line of filaos and the fishermen's pirogues. A paradise for herds of zebus, the beach stretches and stretches and stretches. known as "Little Jamaica", Kafountine has managed to create its own special atmosphere, with a rather successful "tourists-Kafountinois-toubabs settled" cohabitation. Much less touristy than Cap Skirring, Kafountine attracts a clientele who come to enjoy nature and authentic encounters around a log fire, rather than purely seaside tourism. Take a stroll along the beach near the fishing village in the late afternoon, when the hustle and bustle is at its peak. The unloading of fish crates, which takes place at the very edge of the bar, is impressive. The men then run in single file, crates on their heads, towards the buyers from Dakar and beyond. On the same beach, on the ground, women sell freshly caught fish directly, this time in smaller quantities. As for the camps, they line up along the beach and the coast for several kilometers. The least that can be said, and very quickly verified, is that journeys are long in Kafountine. Cycling is a good idea. In addition to the camps that open and close every day, some have been running for some time on a more solid footing. Perhaps that's why Kafountine is so inexpensive. All offer excursions to the Karone islands, another bird island and walks in the bolongs. To reach Kafountine by public transport, minibuses or bush cabs leave regularly from Ziguinchor, Bignona and Séléti, the Gambia border post. You can also take a 7-seater to Kassel and then a motorcycle cab to Kouba, where you can spend the night. From there, you can take a privatized pirogue to Niomoune and reach the south shore. This can also be done in the opposite direction. Good to know: there is no cash dispenser near Kafountine. Don't forget to withdraw money in Bignona or Ziguinchor - it would be a shame to have to leave early.
