Ziguinchor is the economic capital of the region, with a population of around 270,000. A transit town on the way to Cap Skirring or Kafountine, it's also a good starting point for a trip to Djilapao and Affiniam. The pretty sunsets over the river, the tree-lined alleys, the authentic atmosphere and the friendly inhabitants are all part of its charm. Ziguinchor is well worth a visit. You'll get there by boat, and it's not unusual for dolphins to escort you to the mouth of the Casamance River. The Emile Badiane bridge is the only one to span the Casamance River, carrying the road to Bignona. On one side, the administrative town, with its colonial buildings, including the governance office, the regional council and the courthouse. A hint of nostalgia hangs in the air as you stroll past the old trading houses in the red of the past, between the small market on rue Javelier and the river. On the other side, further upstream, is industrial Ziguinchor, the fishing center near the landing stage and, a little further on, the peanut factory with its mountains of seccos that can be seen beyond the protective ramparts. The town is larger than it appears at first glance. A large, well-tarmacked avenue runs around part of it, encircling more popular districts, less densely populated than the checkerboard-constructed center.
