40 miles southeast of Sucre. The small town of Tarabuco is known throughout the country for the exceptional richness of its folklore: traditional clothing and dances of Inca origin. It is famous for its Sunday market. On this day, the peasants sell ceramics and beautiful handmade fabrics. Tucked away in a small valley, set in the middle of hills and crowned with eucalyptus trees, Tarabuco entered Bolivian history in 1816, during the battle of Jumbate. Besieged by the Spaniards, the villagers, led by a woman, Dona Juana Azurduy de Padilla, succeeded in defeating the besiegers and liberating their city.
