Surrounded by forests, meadows, pastures and rocky outcrops, the village of Léoncel, perched at an altitude of 900 m, is home to around 60 inhabitants and a beautiful 12th-century Cistercian abbey. A jewel of Romanesque art, it was built in 1137 by 12 Bonneveaux monks and quickly established itself as the most important monastery in the Vercors. Léoncel comes from the Latin word "Lyonnae" and "cella", meaning monastery on the Lyonne, which in Celtic means "watercourse". A gateway to the Col de la Bataille and the Lente forest, the Léoncel valley attracts hikers in summer and Nordic skiers and snowshoers in winter.
