A fortress is said to have been built here in the 9th century to counter Norman invasions. It is also home to the vast Etang de Vioreau, the reservoir for the Nantes-Brest canal and the largest lake in the region (200 ha), a site of many sporting and recreational activities. Neighboring villages and hamlets of character, it offers many attractions: the Erdre, Lac de Vioreau, the Arcades du Gué de la Roche, churches and two (privately-owned) castles, La Chauvelière and La Lucinière, with its listed avenue of three-hundred-year-old oaks. Near the northern beach of Vioreau, you cross the 600-hectare forest of the same name to reach La Meilleraye.
