La Chapelle-aux-Bois owes its name to a chapel that was built around 1594 and modified in the th century. Located at the same distance from the municipalities of Hardémont, Haudompré and Grémifontaine, it created a community in the middle of the woods. The main vocation of the Chapel-aux-Bois village is agriculture with a predominance for cattle rearing and dairy products. The municipality is located at an altitude of 589 m and has approximately 675 inhabitants.
