Fénétrange, a Moselle town on the banks of the Sarre, was originally the seat of a seigniory under the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Enter the fortified town through the Porte de France and you'll find yourself in a small town worthy of the greatest medieval settings. It's all there! The castle and its moat, the collegiate church, the half-timbered houses, the iron house... and we learn during the guided tour that underground passages linked the castle to certain parts of the town! The most vivid imaginations conjure up a host of adventures, and see themselves battling the various assailants who have attempted to take the town over the centuries and the wars that have raged in the region. But let's return to our own time and be content with admiring the sculpted facades of the town center and following the path of the impregnable ramparts. You can also visit the church of Saint-Rémy, a former 15th-century Gothic collegiate church with magnificent stained-glass windows, which is listed alongside the Château de Fénétrange as a Monument Historique. The old town center is a lovely place to stroll and admire the many period houses in a wide variety of styles, a number of picturesque chapels and the 19th-century Lutheran church outside the old town. The Fénétrange Music and Gastronomy Festival has been held from August to October for over 40 years. Enjoy a wide range of concerts, meals and tastings.
