Château-Salins is located halfway between Metz and Nancy. It's part of the Saulnois region, which owes its name to salt mining, which began in the 17th century. The salt works produced up to 9,000 tons of salt a year, but was abandoned in 1826. In the 19th century, Château-Salins was a sub-prefecture of the Meurthe department, with tanneries, glassworks, earthenware factories, plaster mills and a major hemp canvas production center. Today, the commune no longer houses a sub-prefecture, but a Maison de l'État, which brings together administrative services.
