The village of Esnes-en-Argonne was used during the First World War as a cantonment for the French army and as a forward dressing station. Entirely destroyed during the Great War, it was the first Meusian village to be rebuilt in 1920. 6,661 Poilus, including 3,000 in two ossuaries, lie at the level of the national necropolis of Esnes-Malancourt, which covers 3.4 ha.
