Damvillers is a small rural community (650 inhabitants), located about 25 km north of Verdun. It is relatively famous for the French naturalist painter, Jules Bastien-Lepage, who was born in the village in 1848. A monumental sculpture by Auguste Rodin representing the artist can be admired there. Do not miss the pretty church of Saint-Maurice (11th century) and the venerable white willow, a remarkable tree with a circumference of more than 8 m (at the edge of the D905). Also, the ponds of Ballastières, open to the public, host many migratory birds. They are a well-known fishing spot for the locals, subject to a permit. Various walking routes
