Once located at the crossroads of five Roman roads, the village of Avioth took shape over time. It is only mentioned in the 12th century, with the discovery of a statue of the Virgin and the erection of a modest Romanesque chapel. The miraculous statue, one of the rare black virgins of northeastern France, attracted many faithful, and the construction of a more important building was started, the sumptuous Notre-Dame basilica that we know today. The sanctuary also houses a masterpiece unique in the world, classified as a historical monument, La Recevresse. A pilgrimage is organized there every year on July 16th.
