Briey, an ancient Celtic fortress, witness to feudal wars and religious turmoil, developed into a prosperous center in the Middle Ages under the Counts of Bar and the Dukes of Lorraine. Despite the ravages of the plague and foreign assaults, notably Russian in 1815, it became an important steel-making center during industrialization, forming the "triangle of fire". After the industrial decline of the 1960s, Briey turned to tourism and nature activities, preserving its heritage, including Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse. In 2017, it became Val-de-Briey, merging several communes while retaining its history and uniqueness.
