The history of this charming village nestling in the lower Ourcq valley dates back to the Gauls, when "croso" meant "in a hollow, wet and marshy land". Crouy, which became Croyacum, appears to have been an important commercial crossroads in Gallo-Roman times. In the 13th century, Jean de Barres, a crusading companion of Saint-Louis, had a chapel built in his château du Houssoy. Crouy is a popular hiking destination: GR11, GR11A, the Quatre-Vallées trail and the Multien circuit. Pleasure boating on the canal has a stopover at the port of Crouy-Varinfroy. Nearby, the moats and tower of the Château de Gesvres still stand.
