It was in the ruins of the old castle of Fontette that Jeanne de Saint-Rémi de Luz de Valois was born in 1756. Married to the Count de la Motte, she imagined with him a daring stratagem: to make the naïve Cardinal de Rohan believe that he would attract the favors of Marie-Antoinette by advancing him the money necessary to buy a fabulous diamond necklace. The swindle brought him a considerable fortune until the truth was discovered. Whipped and branded in the Place de Grève, she was imprisoned at the Salpêtrière. She escaped and ended up miserable in London in 1791.
