An international crossroads in the 12th and 13th centuries, Bar-sur-Aube hosted the annual Champagne fairs. In 1911, the town witnessed the revolt of the Aube winegrowers, who fought against the Marne wine merchants to maintain the Champagne appellation in their vineyards. Today, the old part of the town is encircled by boulevards where the ramparts once stood. But the old Bar still retains its picturesque little streets, old hotels and two churches. A stroll through the network of cellars and underground passages reveals traces of medieval fair activity. A dedicated tourist circuit has been set up.
