Bayel has been working with glass since the year 1300. In 1678, Jean-Baptiste Mazzolay, a Venetian master glassmaker, created a glass factory there to compete with the monopoly of Venice. Louis XIV gave the Royal Crystal Factory of Bayel its letters of nobility, thanks to the exclusivity of the production and sale between Chaumont and Paris. It became the "Cristallerie Royale de Champagne" and welcomed thousands of visitors every year. It had to close its doors in 2016. It is nevertheless possible to continue to admire the work of the master glassmakers during the demonstrations set up at the Bayel-Musée du Cristal.
