The Megalithic MonumentsDawn has a large concentration of megaliths mainly concentrated in the northwestern part of the department, Le. Menhirs, dolmens and polissoirs, so many stones bear witness to a distant past, the final Neolithic (2 500 to 2 000 BC). Men of this age were used with abundant material on the territory, with cuisien sandstone formed at the lower Eocene (53 million years BC). This explains the presence of mégalithisme on our territory. To date, we witness: 13 dolmens, whose Breton name means "Table de Pierre". Originally covered by a ground mound, they were discovered through erosion. They were used as graves and could be re-used: Vamprin of the Vamprin and the whites-ditches in Marcilly-le-Hayer… 7 menhirs, whose Breton name means "Pierre Erect". Their use remains a mystery (stele, stone of sacrifice, contours of the territory…): menhir from Grande-Pierre to Saint-Aubin, menhir of Pierre-au-Coq at Tremblay… A Soligny-les-Etangs, it is said that Attila would have embraced the menhir of Pierre-au-Coq. 16 polissoirs, sandstone blocks with their upper surface of grooves and troughs and used to polish their silex. At the entrance of the hamlet of Tremblay, coming from Nogent-sur-Seine, is a polissoir dating from the Age of the Peter polite.Information and circuit available at the Tourist Office of Du and the Seine Valley (Tel.) 03 25 39 42 07.
