Stonne, a small village with fewer than 50 inhabitants, was the scene of some very violent confrontations during the Second World War. On May 15, 1940, the German advance was halted on the nearby ridge line. For several days, German and French infantry and armor battled to occupy the village. In 4 days, Stonne was taken and retaken 17 times! Resistance in the combat zone lasted from May 14 to June 11, 1940. In memory of these events, there is a memorial, a B1 tank and an orientation table in the center of town, as well as a map of a historical circuit and a commemorative plaque.
