STROMBOLI VOLCANO

Natural site to discover

Hiking. Today, it is no longer possible to go to the crater because an eruption is underway since July 2019. Access was free or guided, but the death of a hiker by heart attack when the volcano awoke has put on hold any approach to the volcano on foot, too close to the crater. But it is still possible to make a short one hour hike from the village to the authorized height point to observe the volcano at night and see the lava spouting. It is a magical sight! A good equipment is necessary: good shoes, sweater, flashlight and drinks. Count on one hour of ascent. The hike starts from Piscità, in the northwest of the island. After passing the beach and the last houses of the village, you cross a landscape of terraced crops up to an altitude of a hundred meters, above the observatory of the point Labronzo. At this point, following the path that turns, you come across a terrace overlooking the impressive lava slope of the Fuoco lava road. If you don't have the energy, you can book a table at the pizzeria of the Stromboli Observatory a little further up. A free shuttle service is available from the restaurant to the port, subject to reservation. This is the ideal place to observe the explosions of the 5 active craters which project, at regular intervals, huge jets of molten lava. The lava flows are always channelled through the natural path of the Sciara del Fuoco.

TEMPIO DI ZEUS OLYMPIOS

Religious buildings
5/5

From Highway 118 to the West, we reach the temple of Zeus also called the Olymperion, a huge sacred building of doric style, (6,430 m ²), glorified by Diodore and Polybel, and built in memory of the victory against the Carthaginians in Himere in 408 BC. This temple is one of the largest that has ever been built in Antiquity. The two cyclopes, once inserted in the middle of the half-columns of the temple as to support the forgiveness, became the symbols of the city. Completely stripped of his sculptures and decorations, the temple of Zeus stood up until the Middle Ages, and gradually, gradually, over the years fell into ruins.

GIUNONE TEMPIO

The temple of Junon is situated in a dominant position, isolated on a hillside, at the eastern end of the Valley of Temples. It was built around 460-450 BC in Doric style, its classical architecture now retains 25 intact columns for the pleasure of the curious, amateurs and historians. Comparable to the temple of the Concorde, it originally consisted of 34 columns, 13 on the longest sides and 6 on the shortest sides. Sixteen of its columns have also preserved their capitals. Imagine that its roof was once covered with marble tiles.

Its classical plan consists of an entrance vestibule called pronaos, a central piece, cella, and a posterior vestibule, opisthodome, as tradition desires. Its distinctive feature is the later construction of a gradins in the cella, where red traces witness a fire that historians have associated with the carthaginoises invasions of 406 B.C. and its attribution is uncertain, although it is widely named Junon temple by confusion. In the east you see a great altar once dedicated to sacrifice, as well as a piece of road dug by the wheels of the tanks of the time. Behind the temple, archaeologists also discovered a tank.

After its twin, the temple of La Concorde, it is certainly the best preserved temple of the valley, and its dominant position, 120 meters above the sea on the highest point of the Valley of Temples, makes it all the more impressive!

Between 1698 and 1710, Giacomo Serpotta carried out the exuberant interior of this building, considered to be his masterpiece and called the "white coral cave". His stucco, decorated with allegorical statues and a hectic composition, makes the place exceptional. The paintings show the lives of Saint Francis and Saint Laurent. Above the altar, always made by Serpotta, was the splendid Nativity of Jesus, the last Work of Caravaggio carried out in 1609, which was unfortunately back in 1969.

In the midst of lush Mediterranean vegetation, aisles blend into a maze of hedges and bandes, spread over 3 hectares. Some deviant constructions are projecting us into Lewis Carroll's strange universe. They are the work of English Lady Trevelyan, ornithologist, who would would architect at his lost hours, and former owner of the garden. The advantage of this park is that it has remained a very lively meeting place. It is one of the privileged appointments of aboriginal people.

This church was built in 1314 at the request of King Frederick of Aragon and dedicated to Our Lady of L 'Assomption. Built with granite blocks from the ancient temple of Aphrodite, it preserved its gothic style of the XIV century, with its delicate giant berries. Its Campanile, an old watchtower of the thirteenth century, is separated from the rest of the building (to be visited also). The interior of the church contains interesting works of art and rich stucco.
