Practical information : Accomodation Sicily
Budget & Tips
Small budget. 20 € for camping or per person in a dormitory bed in a youth hostel, 50-60 € for a room in a modest hotel or a slightly rustic agriturismo
Medium budget. 70-120 €/day: nice comfortable room in a charming hotel or a luxury agriturismo .
Big budget. From 120 €/day and up. Large hotels are legion in the old palaces of the big cities, in coastal villas...
Good deals. Always check the price when booking directly with the hotel, which is often cheaper. As everywhere in Europe, you can find rooms and apartments for rent on Airbnb at interesting prices, but also last minute promotions on booking.com and other hotel reservation sites
To be booked
During the high season in summer, it is essential to book your stay well in advance, especially in Catania, Taormina, Syracuse, on the Aeolian Islands and on the island of Favignana, which are fully booked every year from June to September.
What's very local
Hotels. There are many more B&Bs than hotels in Sicily. And even for some destinations only B&Bs. However, the hotel offer, especially in the luxury category, with garden, swimming pool, spa, etc., remains very good value for money. Generally, breakfast is included in the price of the room. In the city, when there is parking, it is usually charged (minimum 10 € per night).
Bed and breakfast. This is a relatively new option, but it has developed so much that it is now commonplace in Sicily. In the tourist areas you are spoilt for choice. Generally the guest houses, apartments and small houses on the beach or in town, are comfortable. The welcome is Sicilian, i.e. warm and they will go out of their way to help you organize your stay. In the city, especially in Palermo, entire buildings have been converted into B&Bs with excellent comfort and very interesting rates
Rural tourism - agriturismo. Green tourism and ecotourism are in full expansion in Sicily as in the rest of Italy. And this formula is particularly well suited to this agricultural island. The agritourism establishments are similar to rural lodgings and come in several ranges, from farmhouses to castles. Their characteristic is to be located away from the big tourist complexes. For smaller budgets, it is sometimes even possible to camp on a plot of land. In addition to discovering the local gastronomy, agricultural traditions (olives, vines, livestock, etc.) and nature, these green and quiet stays often allow you to practice horseback riding for example. The estates are sometimes equipped with tennis courts or offer bike rentals. For your information, to qualify for the "Agriturismo" certification, the hosts must continue to carry out an agricultural activity (as in France for the "Accueil paysan" label). As you can see, the aim of this green tourism is not mass tourism or productivity. The majority of the sites practice organic or sustainable agriculture.
Youth hostels. They are more and more numerous in Sicily, especially in the big coastal cities. A wise choice for those with a small budget and for those who like to meet people. Because here you will easily mix with travellers from all over the world in the common and friendly spaces (kitchen, dining room, games room). Some hostels, as they are more commonly known, have restaurants. Nothing exceptional but an unbeatable value for money. Just like the accommodation. Of course, you can opt for a bed in a dormitory for a very competitive price (12-15 €). But many youth hostels now also offer private rooms. Don't hesitate, you will gain in comfort for a few extra euros. In addition to beds, they often organise cultural outings and excursions. The program of the week's festivities is often posted at the reception. For hostels in the network of the United Federation of Youth Hostels in Palermo, Noto, and Linguaglossa, you may be asked for a membership card. Please contact the United Federation of Youth Hostels (www.fuaj.org) for more information.
For food lovers
The breakfasts are exceptional in Sicily. The passion for good products is reflected on the table! Especially in the agriturismi, these farms converted into charming hotels, which offer all the products of the house on the buffet.
The rooms are non-smoking in all hotels, but when they have a balcony, there is often an ashtray outside.
Be careful though: "B&B" signs are everywhere, and if some are "real" B&Bs managed by the host, others are more like small hotels without charm: you will have a room or a small independent accommodation, but you will hardly have the opportunity to share a moment or a meal with your host. For a "conventional" B&B, you can go to www.bbitalia.it.
