Eponymous circular fountain with allegorical statues, balustrades and stairs, designed by François Camilliani
In Piazza Pretoria stands a circular fountain of the same name with its allegorical statues, balustrades and stairs, designed by the 16th century architect François Camilliani. Its nickname of Fountain of Shame(Fontana della Vergogna) comes from the fact that some inhabitants of Palermo were shocked by the nakedness of its statues. For the record, it is said that nuns from neighbouring convents, offended by all this nature thus revealed, came to cut off the noses of the beautiful statues (anatomy classes were not what they are!).
