LA CÔTE SAUVAGE

Natural Crafts
3/5
1 review

The beautiful wild coastline stretches along the west coast of Djerba. Here, there are no buildings on the seafront, except for a few mosques that were once used as watchtowers. Take the road along the coast from Ajim in the late afternoon, heading north: you will have the setting sun in front of you and will be able to appreciate the wild landscape between the Mediterranean and the rocky landscape planted with palm trees! Stop at the beach of Sidi Jmour with its small eponymous mosque, about 16 km north of Ajim. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, the Sidi Jmour mosque owes its massive appearance to the military role it played for a long time. Indeed, the 18 mosques built on the coast of Djerba also had a defensive role. To remain discreet, these mosques had no minaret and were rather "packed", they are sometimes called dwarf mosques. They were topped with a lantern that served to send messages from one mosque to another in case of attack. This same lantern is lit today at the time of the prayer. All along the coast are also small beaches of jagged rocks where Djerbian families come to picnic. You will also meet men who practice traditional fishing. They plant palm branches in the sea forming corridors that narrow little by little to reach a trap. These assemblies of branches are judiciously placed by taking into account the marine currents. An art to be observed during your walk along the coast.

DAR OTHMAN

Mansion to visit
3/5
1 review

This splendid residence was built at the end of the 16th century by the wealthy Othman Dey, who wanted a quiet place to live in peace, and occupied it until his death in 1610. Dar Othman has a facade with marble columns, a patio surrounded by porticoes with two-colored pointed arches and Moorish-style colonnades. Both sober and magnificent, the decoration borrows the most beautiful materials (marble, ceramics) without being ostentatious. An interior garden replaced the paving of the courtyard in 1936. The site is unfortunately not always open.

This late 18th century building houses the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions. The various collections are highlighted in this beautiful family home, very nicely furnished. Its common areas and apartments are harmoniously decorated and chosen according to their use. A reconstruction of the daily life of a well-to-do family of the 19th century, in its setting and its customs. The museum is, since March 2009, closed for restoration work. Ask about the date of reopening.

COVERED MARKET AND SOUK

Crafts to discover
2.5/5
2 reviews

The beating heart of Houmt Souk (word for word "the souk district"). The souks in the center sell fabrics, carpets and tourist objects. Around it, the specialized souks: the souk of the boilermakers, the ironworkers and the goldsmiths. In the jewelers' souk, the craftsmen, of Jewish origin, make jewelry as in the time of their ancestors. In the south, the spice souk and the fish market (auction from 10 am to 1 pm) remain very lively, especially during the auction. In the surrounding restaurants, Djerbians cook their freshly bought fish!

CARTHAGELAND

Amusement park

With its kitsch look of a pasteboard village and the huge sculptures of guards on elephants' backs that stand in front of the entrance, it is hard to miss this amusement park! In a spirit of discovery through entertainment, a multitude of rides and animations walk visitors through the history of Tunisia. Since January 2018, the park has two new attractions: King Kong, which is 13 m high and can move alone, and a Big Eight! Why not, to spend a pleasant moment with the children.

BORJ GHAZI MUSTAPHA (BORJ EL KEBIR)

Monuments to visit

Superb view from the guard roads! Built around 1392 on the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Girba (now Houmt Souk), whose vestiges are used in the construction of the work. Around 1450, it was extended. Nearby is Borj Er Rous, where the massacre perpetrated by the troops of the Turk Dragut took place: here was built the "tower of skulls", the pirate having piled the skulls of his enemies. In 1848 it was replaced by an obelisk of 9 m.

SOUK DE JARA

Markets

It is in fact a market that spreads over several streets in the center of the city. You can find many spices coming from the region or from farther away. Among the local spices, the dried pepper. Don't miss the henna powder, this coloring and medicinal plant cultivated in the oasis of Gabes. You will also find objects made from palm trees: baskets, hats, etc. Have a coffee on the roadside, close to the souk, or ask for a ride to the "Casse-Croute Fitouri", behind the main square, where you will taste good sandwiches for less than 2 DT!

The beaches of the surroundings of Tabarka offer sites of choice for the amateurs of tranquillity: Melloula (a beach of rocks) in the west, in about ten kilometers towards the Cape Roux, with its beach of Messida. Going up towards the north-east and Bizerte, a pretty coastline emerges, well cut with beautiful creeks: Berkoukech, rocky and wild, Jebara, a large sandy beach surrounded by a wood of eucalyptus, and, a little further, Capo Negro and the beach of Sidi Mechrig with their grandiose viewpoints. CASBAH

Military monuments

Dating from the 15th century and built on Byzantine ruins, the Kasbah of Gafsa is located behind the courthouse. It was restored after having been particularly damaged during the Second World War by the explosion of a German ammunition depot. A very pleasant garden, fed by thermal springs, brings calm and serenity. This place contrasts strongly with the tumult of the city. It is a pleasant place for a walk that we recommend during your stay in the city of Gasfa.

PALMERAIE

Parks and gardens

Dating at least from the Roman period, the palm grove of Gabes, also called the Maritime Oasis, has long been the main attraction of the city. With its 60 km2 it extends to the sea. From the promontory of Ras el Oued, beautiful view of the oasis. The tragedy of this palm grove, in addition to the strong pollution present, is that the date palms give only "mediocre" dates, not exported and which bring little. As a result, the palm trees are "killed" (word of a guide!) and the number of palm trees decreases every year, from 400 000 in 1980 to 150 000 in 2022. A tragedy!

LARGE MOSQUE

Religious buildings

Built by the Aghlabids and enlarged by the Hafsids, the Great Mosque of Gafsa is the third largest mosque in Tunisia. It would have seen the day between the year 800 and the year 909. As often in Tunisia, non-Muslims are only allowed to visit the courtyard. Its architecture is identical to that of Kairouan and the Zitouna mosque in Tunis. The court is surrounded by columns with capitals borrowed from other ancient monuments. Only the minaret is recent (and dates from the twentieth century), since the old minaret was in ruins.

PALMERAIE

Parks and gardens

Bypassing the Roman site and skirting the fortress, one reaches, by a little frequented entrance, the quiet palm grove with narrow roads. Extending in a rectangle of about 4 km by 3 km, it surprises by its high density and the height of its palm trees. One finds there a multitude of trees or fruit plants and sometimes even an inhabited house. In some places, the forest which clears up lets appear splendid landscapes with the red ochre of the mountains in background of this green ocean, under a deep blue sky.

MOSQUES AND MARABOUTS

Religious buildings

Nefta is distinguished from Tozeur by its major religious role. Second holy city of Tunisia after Kairouan, it welcomes since the ninth century Sufi pilgrimages. The city has many religious buildings: two mosques and more than a hundred marabouts punctuate its landscape with their white domes. The most famous, located at the edge of the Corbeille, is the marabout of Sidi Bou Ali, a Sufi saint of the XIIIth century. It is the oldest place of pilgrimage of the city. Pilgrims still come from all over the country to venerate him.

At the foot of the dunes, camels are waiting to take you to the top of the dune where you will have a breathtaking view of the desert, especially with the light of the sunset and a striking silence. THE MEDINA

Street square and neighborhood to visit

The medina of Tozeur is one of the most beautiful in Tunisia. Called Ouled el-Hadef district, it dates in places from the XIVth century. You enter here in a tangle of alleys with vaulted walls and built with these superb sand-colored bricks. The medina of Tozeur is entirely built with these bricks of clay moulded with the hand and whose geometrical reasons in relief on the frontages of the houses symbolize the richness of the owner. These symbols would have a magic-religious significance. Take time to stroll in the coolness of the streets. Here you come across a small square once used to "park" dromedaries, with superb carved doors, there you stop in a bortal, these long vestibules with date palm ceilings that keep the coolness perfectly. Further on you recognize one of the many mosques, identifiable by the green door. You also have fun finding the Corinthian capitals and Roman columns from the surrounding ancient sites. Dar El Hadef is the first house of Tozeur. Today it is open to the public and its visit allows you to understand a little better the history of the medina. It is not perfectly maintained and it is a pity. Here and sometimes elsewhere, the houses of the medina of Tozeur are neither perfectly maintained nor completely renovated. The medina is also quite dirty in places. Let's hope that the classification in progress to be included in the Unesco world heritage will make this architectural jewel better preserved!

SIDI ELYES MOSQUE

Religious buildings

Its name comes from a Turkish admiral, whose mausoleum is adjacent to the building. The precise history of the mosque is not well documented. In 1893, it was restored to become a mosque-cathedral. The minaret, dating from 1448, is the oldest part. The mosque consists of a prayer hall, a room for the imam and a minaret at the southeast corner. It is surrounded by three patios on the east, north and south sides. The main entrance is on the eastern side and opens onto Sidi Abbas Street. It is distinguished by its typical Ottoman style.

BORJ EL HSAR

Archaeological site

"Archaeological excavations have revealed to the amazed eyes of Kerkennians and visitors one of the Roman quarters of Cercinae, the ancient capital of the archipelago. A survey carried out at the foot of the borj which is located on an eminence allowed to meet archaic strata dating from the seventh century B.C. This discovery shows that the site is a Phoenician foundation and that the strategic position of Kerkennah was noticed and occupied very early by the Phoenicians in their expansion in the West... Paved streets, some of which date back to the Punic era. Large transit port with its quays and its lighthouse whose submerged structures have just been found. On the sea side, it was defended by a beautiful and imposing wall built in the5th century B.C. Very rich mosaics in the houses... Beautiful oblong cisterns very well preserved testify to the mastery that the Kerkennians of the Antiquity had to save water... " (Excerpt from La Presse.)

Today, there are no more excavations in progress in this area, which is nevertheless very rich and just waiting to reveal its secrets; the fineness of the visible elements allows us to affirm that the Phoenician city was civilized (mosaics everywhere, many cisterns, etc.) and rich. Given the rarity of Phoenician ruins, it is surprising that nobody cares about them! The fort, as for it, is of more recent construction, because Roman, and was built just behind the city. It is still standing and in a fairly good state of preservation.

CATACOMBES

Necropolis and Catacomb to visit

These 240 galleries, which run for 5 kilometers but can only be visited for about 40 meters, were used as tombs for some 25,000 Christians from the 2nd to the 4th century. There are four of them, three of which have been completely excavated, the catacombs of the Good Shepherd, Hermes and Severus. They are very well preserved when they were discovered, but they deteriorate rapidly once the earth is removed. The catacombs of Sousse are certainly less rich, but better preserved than those of Rome. The entrance is by the street of 25-July-57, near the station of hirings.

A vast natural fishpond, the El Bihan lake represents a paradise for the fish that come to reproduce there. Fishing in Zarzis, a real spectacle, is practiced according to age-old techniques: as soon as a school of ouzaffs, highly prized dwarf fish, is spotted, the fishermen start beating the water with flippers to push it towards the opening of the kiss, a fine net skilfully stretched. Salted, then dried in the sun, the ouzaff is stored in amphorae and kept for winter consumption. The market starts at the Place de l'Horloge, where the minaret stands.
