Around 80 BC, a Greek ship was wrecked near the coast of present-day Mahdia. The wreck remained untouched until 1907 when it attracted the attention of a fisherman. Six years later, part of the treasure was brought to the surface: bronze statues, capitals... An expedition of the commander Cousteau fished out other pieces, and the excavations still continue. The jewel of the current collection is a bronze couple whose subject is Dionysus. You won't see any of them in Mahdia: the collection is in the Bardo Museum in Tunis.
