OVERSTORY
Read moreThis is the Financial District's hip new cocktail bar, set on the top floor of an Art Deco tower that also houses a gourmet restaurant (Saga). What we like: the surprising 360-degree view from the terrace, and the bar's intimate atmosphere. What we don't like: the price of cocktails and the hefty bill that follows. Reservations are possible, but only if you spend a minimum of US$50 per person. We therefore recommend going without a reservation, preferably at opening time. A great experience.
COOLIDGE CORNER THEATER
Read moreWant to see an international film in OV with subtitles? Head for this independent cinema, which must be supported at all costs. The programming is eclectic and independent films, recent or not, are in the spotlight. A few blockbusters are usually showing. The building, which dates back to 1906, originally housed a church, before being transformed into an Art Deco movie theatre in the 1930s. The cinema originally had only one screen, but now has four. A must for the inhabitants of the district.
JAZZ SHOWCASE
Read morePerhaps less well known than Buddy Guy's or Andy's, this establishment has an excellent blues and jazz program, and has the advantage of not being very touristy. Opened by Joe Segal in 1947, this club is particularly cherished by Chicagoans for its authenticity and the passion it conveys. Despite various moves around the city, Jazz Showcase has not lost its clientele, perhaps also because, even when there are people around, no one is ever turned away. Be patient, the concerts are really worth the detour.

LUDLOW LIQUORS
Read moreThis old, untidy-looking street corner bar will deliver its cachet to whoever dares to push open its door. Take a seat in the diner-style banquettes or directly at the bar, where you'll gaze at some beautiful old bottles. The place is cosy and the cocktail bar lives up to its reputation in the neighborhood. Ludlow Liquors has a speakeasy feel to it, but the large, rootsy outdoor terrace and the tags in the bathroom sadly detract from the period postcard charm. Burgers are also available.

The Rooftop Lounge
Read moreAvocado toast, crab cake, shrimp ceviche, fried Brussels sprouts, salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood pasta, desserts ranging from apple strudel to crème brûlée... Despite this extensive menu, it's not necessarily for the food that we recommend The Rooftop Lounge, but for the absolutely breathtaking view from its terrace. This makes it the ideal place to watch the sun go down, with a good cocktail in hand. As the place can quickly become overcrowded, try to book in advance.

Look up to the ceiling, which features colorful paper fliers. Mondays are happy hour all night long while Fridays are reserved for drag shows, which we highly recommend of course.
