Day 1: From Kuala Lumpur to Malacca

Steps: Kuala Lumpur, Malacca

As soon as you arrive in Kuala Lumpur, head straight for Malacca, just a two-hour drive to the south. More picturesque and less crowded, Malacca offers a gentle acclimatization to local temperatures. Stroll through the narrow streets of Chinatown and indulge in Nyonya cuisine, a delicious blend of Malay and Chinese flavors.

Day 2: Malacca

Steps: Malacca

On this new day in Malacca, visit the main sites of interest, such as Christ Church or the Stadthuys. Try a cruise on the Sungai Melaka, for a glimpse of the surrounding kampungs, with several beautiful shophouses. Have lunch here and enjoy the charms of the city, before returning to Kuala Lumpur in the late afternoon. Once you've settled in, enjoy dinner on Jalan Alor.

Day 3: Kuala Lumpur

Steps: Kuala Lumpur

For early risers, you can pick up your ticket for the SkyBridge at Petronas Towers. Alternatively, start your visit to Kuala Lumpur with Chinatown and the Colonial Quarter. Several temples, both Chinese and Hindu, are worth a visit in Chinatown. Heading towards the colonial district, the Central Market is a must for a shopping spree. Further afield, the superb Masjid Jamek can be visited at certain times, and the padang at Merdeka Square offers a fine view of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. If you still have time, visit the fascinating Museum of Islamic Art or the KL Bird Park, with the world's largest aviary. Evening on the Bintang Walk.

Day 4: From Batu Caves to Cameron Highlands

Steps: Tanah Rata

In the morning, explore the Batu Caves outside Kuala Lumpur. An exceptional site where the annual Hindu festival of Thaipusam takes place. Return to Kuala Lumpur for lunch, then departure for the Cameron Highlands by bus. Arrival late afternoon. Walk to Tanah Rata and dinner.

Day 5: Cameron Highlands

Visit the Boh Tea plantation. Stroll among the tea plants and enjoy British cuisine at the Smokehouse restaurant. Back on Tanah Rata, follow the hiking trails for a glimpse of the Perak jungle, where Jim Thompson, the American silk baron, disappeared without a trace. Another night on site to enjoy the high altitude air.

Day 6: En route to Penang and Georgetown

Steps: Georgetown

Morning departure for Penang and Georgetown. Choose to stay in the old quarter of Georgetown, close to the Heritage Trail. Stroll past monuments, art galleries and shophouses, each more picturesque than the last. Lunch and dinner in the local style, including some excellent Chinese restaurants.

Day 7: From Penang to Langkawi

Steps: Georgetown

Visit the superb Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and lunch at New World Park, for a taste of Penang's hawker cuisine. Afternoon departure for Langkawi Island. Laze by the beach in the evening.

Day 8: Langkawi

Farniente in Langkawi, with the possibility of discovering the mangroves. In the evening, flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Day 9: Kota Bharu and the east coast

From Kuala Lumpur, departure for the east coast, its fishing villages and white sand beaches. Towns steeped in tradition and natural escapades offer an interesting mix, especially Kota Bharu for its ambience, local crafts and market.

Day 10: Kuala Terengganu

Steps: Kuala Terengganu

Then off to Kuala Terengganu, to visit its famous Chinatown.

Day 11: Pulau Duyong

Steps: Pulau Duyong

For relaxation or diving, head for the island of Pulau Duyong.

Day 12: En route to Sarawak

Steps: Kuching

Return to Kuala Lumpur for your flight to Kuching in Sarawak.

Day 13: From Kuching

Steps: Semenggoh Wildlife Centre

From Kuching, visit the Semenggoh wildlife center.

Day 14: Bako National Park

Also in the vicinity of Kuching, stop off at the nearby Bako National Park, for a glimpse of the mangroves and local flora and fauna.

Day 15: Meeting the Iban

End your stay in Sarawak with a trip up the Batang Ai, to stay at the Nanga Sumpa longhouse and meet the Iban people.

Day 16: En route to Sabah

Steps: Kota Kinabalu

Return to Kuala Lumpur for your flight to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

Day 17: Kota Kinabalu

Steps: Parc National De Tunku Abdul Rahman

After a little rest, discover the surrounding area, including Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park for some snorkeling.

Day 18: Climbing Mount Kinabalu

Steps: Parc National De Kinabalu

Round off your stay with anascent of Mount Kinabalu (also possible in two or three days), with or without the via ferrata.

Back to Kuala Lumpur for a shopping session.

Day 20: Kuala Lumpur and Chinatown
