Just a stone's throw from Kota Kinabalu, the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is one of Malaysia's marine protected areas. Its five beautiful islands located just 20 minutes from KK offer a pleasant getaway and crystal-clear waters that make it a picture-postcard destination. While the beaches are magnificent, most of the coral around the islands has unfortunately been destroyed by dynamite fishing. Pulau Gaya, the largest (1,484 ha), is criss-crossed by 20 km of trails through the rainforest, making it ideal for hiking between swims. Pulau Sapi is the most popular of the five islands. It offers the most interesting snorkeling opportunities, particularly on its eastern side, as well as a number of pleasant hikes. Pulau Mamutik is the smallest of the islands and the least visited. Its beautiful beaches and coral reefs are almost deserted. Pulau Manukan is best known for its immense beach, where you can observe numerous tropical fish. It's a favorite destination for the inhabitants of Kota Kinabalu. At weekends, the islands are literally packed. On weekdays, it's a little quieter, but you won't be alone. Day trips to the islands are easy to organize, either from KK or from your hotel on one of the islands.
