Capital of the state of Sabah, with a population of over 500,000, Kota Kinabalu is a new town devoid of charm. Formerly known as Jesselton, it was heavily bombed during the Second World War. With its many trendy cafés, its promenade running along the crystal-clear sea and its open, welcoming locals, it's a place that travelers love. Off the coast, several islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park serve as seaside resorts. A major transport hub, the town is a good base for venturing into Kinabalu National Park and further east towards Sandakan.
