Steps: Lahaina, Kahului

Start early in the morning from your hotel near Kahului Airport to reach the foot of the volcano. Ideally, between 5.45 pm and 7 pm, to attend sunrise on the Haleakala volcano. Haleakala, "the sun's house" in Hawaiian, is a sleeping volcano (3 055 m altitude) that occupies two thirds of Maui. It takes you one to two hours on a winding road to reach the crater. The ascent by car is steep and winding. Take patience because you can only see the crater at the end of the journey. You will spend the end of the day Lahaina.

Day 3: Rest in Maui

Steps: Lahaina

Take advantage of this day to rest by visiting the city of Lahaina. This is a city where you can go around by foot and one of the few places of Maui where the nightlife is lively. The day will be devoted to visiting museums and historic monuments, shopping in the shops of the charming streets of the city centre, with a whale watching session as a bonus if it is the season (from December to April; allow 4 hours of available time). For lunch or dinner, Lahaina has cheap restaurants and good restaurants.

Day 4: Arrival on Hawai'i Island

Steps: Kailua, Kailua-Kona

Take a flight to Maui which lands at Kona airport. Once settled in Kailua-Kona, go to Kaloko-Honokohau National Park to see the lava and turtles.

Day 5: The National Park of Volcanoes of Hawaï

Steps: Kailua, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hilo

Leave your hotel on the south coast of Kailua-Kona at 6 am, because the journey to the entrance to the National Park of Volcanoes lasts 2 hours and you need to spend the whole day for the visit. The main stops to make by order: Kilauea Visitor's Center (information centre), Kilauea Caldera (view on the volcano caldera), Thomas A. Jaggar Museum (museum on Hawai'i island volcanoes), Hilo, where you have booked the overnight accommodation.

Places of interest :

Day 6: Hilo

Steps: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hilo, Mauna Kea

The city is ideally located, only 45 minutes from Mauna Kea. Dedicate this day to the visit of the peaceful and authentic Hilo. In the morning, Imiloa Astronomy Center (a must-see museum before going to Mauna Kea), Pacific Tsunami Museum (on tsunamis history in Hilo, Hawaii and in the world). In the afternoon, Banyan Drive (superb road lined with banians), and snorkeling on the different beaches.

Day 7: Mauna Kea

Steps: Hilo, Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea is one of the highest mountains in the world (4 205 m) and its atmosphere is so pure that the largest astronomy observatory on the planet was installed at its summit (13 telescopes). Two major tourist attractions on site: the show of the sunset whose beauty is unique in the world and the observation session of the stars (exceptional precision and clarity). In the morning, stop at Rainbow Falls (waterfalls) and visit the Kaumana Caves located on the road to Mauna Kea. In the afternoon, take the Saddle Road (the only one that leads to Mauna Kea) in the early afternoon, to take the time to make different stops to acclimatize to the altitude. Attention 4x4 mandatory because the road is stony and the steep climb. Between 5pm and 6pm, contemplate the sublime sunset on the Mauna Kea. Take the opportunity to eat and drink. From 6pm to 9pm, make an observation session of stars with an agency or Onizuka Visitor's Center. Around 10pm, return to Hilo.
