Day 1: Day trip to Adelaide

Steps: Adelaide

A day to enjoyAdelaide, Australia's only major city to have escaped Americanization. A peaceful city that has retained a certain colonial style.

Day 2: Heading for Port Augusta

Steps: Port Augusta

From Adelaide, take the Stuart Highway north to Port Augusta. Visit the Wadlata Outback Centre for its exhibitions on the Outback and Aboriginal history, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. A taste of the bush before you head off to the other side of Australia.

Day 3: Troglodyte city of Coober Pedy

Steps: Coober Pedy

Head for the silence of the Outback and Coober Pedy, the mining town and opal capital. Coober Pedy, the "white man's burrow", with its ancient mines and 250,000 opal shafts. Half the population lives underground. You can also spend a night in an underground hotel.

Day 4: Endless deserts

Steps: Uluru - Ayers Rock

Get back on the road early for the long drive to Ayers Rock. On the way, take a break to admire the Painted Desert and the colorful Breakaways Reserve, the setting for Mad Max. Then stop off at the Cadney Homestead (bungalows and motel rooms).

Day 5: On the way to Ayers Rock - Uluru.

Steps: Uluru - Ayers Rock

Second day of road to Ayers Rock.

Day 6: Glowing landscapes

Steps: Uluru - Ayers Rock, Yulara

At sunrise or sunset, admire the superb spectacle of Uluru , which is decked out in all shades of red. Walk around the 26 domes of the Olgas Mountains. Overnight at the nearby Yulara campsite. You can even rent a fully-equipped tent.

Day 7: Steep cliffs of Warrtaka National Park

Steps: Watarrka National Park

It will take you at least 3 hours to drive to Kings Canyon. Watch out for camels and kangaroos along the way. To discover Kings Canyon, take the Kings Canyon Walk (6 km). You'll discover the Garden of Eden, a superb view of the Outback and its 100-metre gorges. Stay overnight at Kings Creek Station.

Day 8: Discover Alice Springs

Steps: Broken Hill, Alice Springs

En route to Alice Springs, 230 km away. Discover the town and the School of the Air, which provides radio lessons for Outback children.

Day 9: Color gradation

From Alice Springs, take a trip (4X4 recommended) to the Rainbow Valley Conservation Reserve and Simpson Gap for some great walking.

Day 10: Continuation of the cross-country tour

Steps: Tennant Creek, Darwin

On the way up to Darwin, close to the Stuart Highway, you'll discover the eggs of the "rainbow snake" (a symbol of Aboriginal mythology) and the Devil's Marbles rock formation. Pass through Tennant Creek and stop further north at Daly Waters, Australia's best-known outback pub. Camping on site.

Day 11: Arrival at Katherine George National Park

Steps: Katherine, Nitmiluk National Park

Direction Katherine. Departure in trek in the Katherine George National Park.

Day 12: Spectacular gorges of blue-green water

Second day at Katherine Gorge National Park. Discover its magnificent gorges and rapids and take a refreshing dip after the heat of the Outback.

Day 13: Discovering Darwin

Steps: Darwin

On to tropical Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory and Top End. Visit the town.

Day 14: After the desert, the green nature of Kakadu National Park.

Visit of Kakadu National Park. Discover its fauna and flora, as well as its numerous archaeological sites.
