Watarrka National Park, formerly known as King's Canyon National Park, is 71,000 hectares in size and is best known for its famous Canyon, a 270-meter deep rift. The park has been the land of the Luritja aborigines for over 22,000 years, who gave it the name Watarrka, a local shrub. Explorer Ernest Giles was the first pioneer to venture there in 1872. He chose the name King, after his good friend Mr. Fielder King, not the king. Watarrka comprises the western part of the George Gill Range with its irregular, steep rock formations, waterholes and gorges that provide a haven for the 600 species of plants and many endemic animals that inhabit it.
