Located 320 km from Darwin, Katherine is thethird largest city in the Northern Territory after Darwin and Alice Springs. With a population of about 250 in the 1930s, the town prospered after the Second World War. Primarily known for the beauty of its gorges to the east, in Nitmiluk National Park, many travelers consider it a stop on the Stuart Highway on their way to Darwin, Kakadu or Litchfield. It is in fact a unique destination with its exceptional natural environment and somewhat eccentric population. Katherine River is the first permanent river you encounter on your way up from Alice Springs to Darwin. The town was severely damaged by the 1998 flood when the water rose up to 2 m in the houses of the center. You can see here and there in Katherine photos taken at the time that show the extent of the damage. As in Alice Springs, many Aborigines are present in Katherine. Silently sitting in the shade of the eucalyptus trees or noisily chatting around the Woolworth's bottle shop, they remind us how much difficulties are still important for this population too long ignored and torn from its values. The main street is the Stuart Highway which crosses the small town. On both sides of the road, there are a few stores, a shopping center, several hotels and restaurants. Katherine is also on the Victoria Highway, the only major road from the NT to WA.
