The only well for civilians, the well of the Place d'Armes was powered by a large wheel inside which two men walked. In the th century, five wells were fed the citadel. That of the Place de l'Place, that of the Cadets, that of the Infantry, that of the Cavalry, and one for the Governor's House. The main sink of weapons square is 60 metres deep and 12 metres in diameter. It gathers the waters from two nearby sources, 35 and 43 metres from the level of the square, respectively.

Read moreHeading towards the Mousson plateau, you will reach the Red Fountain, which has made Pont-à-Mousson famous for over 500 years. Coming from the top of the hill, the water which flows there deposits a reddish ferruginous sediment which gives its name to the fountain. In the 15th century, the spring was already said to have medicinal properties. Many people went there to relieve all sorts of ailments: asthma, anaemia, fatigue... but also to restore beautiful colours to their pale cheeks! It is said that the Cardinal of Richelieu found it excellent!
