GUIMAR MALAYSIAN MALPAIS

Natural Crafts

It is a volcano that gave birth to this malpaís that now constitutes the coast. It is a characteristic example of the arid coastal ecosystem of the cardónal-tabaibal, with numerous candelabra euphorbias(cardón in Spanish). It can be reached from Puertito, or from the village of Güímar, heading towards the coast along a small road that runs parallel to the motorway exit and under the latter. There is a good view of the volcano and its lava field from the Don Martín viewpoint, 4 km south of the village, on the road to Fasnia.

LA CALETA

Site of archaeology crafts and science and technology

This Caleta is a charming little port, located a few kilometres from Playa de las Américas, in the direction of Adeje. For bathing, there is a superb place with white rocks and translucent water. To get to this beautiful cove dotted with caves inhabited by international hippies, you have to pass through the small village, leave the car and take a small coastal path that goes up. This place, known by nudists, is ideal to escape the tourists who invade the beaches of Los Cristianos and Las Américas.

SAN MIGUEL HERMITAGE

Religious buildings

This hermitage was built in 1506 by order of Governor Alonso Fernández de Lugo and placed under the invocation of Archangel San Miguel. The statue of the saint is kept in the church of Santo Domingo and is venerated every year on its patron saint's day, September 29th. After extensive restoration work, it was transformed into an exhibition hall. You can also visit the seventeenth-century church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, which has beautiful Mudejar coffered ceilings and some paintings by Cristóbal Hernández de la Quintana, a Canary painter.

SAN ANTONIO DE PADUA CHURCH

Religious buildings

Built in 1617, this church was destroyed in 1645, then rebuilt, burnt down again and rebuilt again in 1711. Of Baroque inspiration, this church has a central nave in the shape of a Latin cross and a wooden frame typical of the Canary Islands. The paintings and sculptures were all created in a very particular style of the Canarian school. Among the goldsmith works that decorate it are the golden diadem of San Antonio, which dates from 1617, the processional cross from the same period and six large candleholders from the early eighteenth century.

BARRANCO DE MASCA HIKE

Natural Crafts

All agencies will offer you this hike. It is possible to go up or down this ravine by having a boat take you back to the port. If you are three (or more), prefer a boat ticket to go from the barranco to the port of Los Gigantes and book a taxi to go from the port to Masca, it will be cheaper for you. The boats to the barranco leave in the morning, those returning are scheduled for the afternoon.

PARQUE DE TAORO

Parks and gardens

Located on the mountain of the same name, this 100,000 m² area is the ideal place to enjoy superb panoramic views of the coast and Puerto de la Cruz. We recommend starting your visit at the highest point, the Anglican chapel. From there, you can head back down towards Puerto, following the suggested itineraries to the right or left, and there's always a visual to point you in the right direction. You'll come across gardens, gazebos, luminous fountains and waterfalls. And the Gran Hotel Taoro, where Agatha Christie once stayed.
