In 1084, seven monks in search of a secluded place were led to a raised valley above the Guiers Mort, itself dominated by the Grand Som (2,026 m). The travellers settled in. One of the monks, Saint Bruno, created the Carthusian monastic order. The Grande Chartreuse Monastery was born and the isolated site became known as the "Chartreuse Desert". During the centuries that followed, many Carthusian monasteries were created throughout the world. The monastery cannot be visited.

La maison des forges is above all the story of passionate people who never gave up. Indeed, it took 10 years between the initial idea and the opening of this site. But in concrete terms, what can you find inside? Here, you will be able to learn more about the blacksmith's trade. You can discover the tools used by blacksmiths and enter an interactive workshop. Note that temporary exhibitions are also proposed.

The name Traboules designates these famous narrow passages which allow you to go down the hill through the courtyards of buildings. In the 19th century, they were the daily crossing point of the canuts, the weavers. At the end of your journey, the silk workshop awaits you at the bottom of the slopes; its visit is fascinating.
