A particular fort thanks to its hexagonal shape, which has become a tourist gateway to the Vanoise Park and is classified as a historical monument.
Fort Marie Christine is the highest point of the Esseillon barrier (a series of strong buildings dedicated to the protection of the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia). In 1860, with the attachment of Savoy to France, then the opening of the Fréjus railway tunnel (put into service in 1871), the forts lost their usefulness. In the 1970s, the municipality of Aussois bought three of the five forts and a rebirth was then offered to them on the basis of a completely different activity. Fort Marie-Christine, a listed historical monument, has become a tourist gateway to the Parc de la Vanoise. Its hexagonal shape is very particular and the view it offers on the landscape is breathtaking. This fort was intended for 150 men. Individuals and groups are now welcome at an altitude of 1,500 m, through the educational area and the discovery trail, which includes 12 reading tables to understand the landscape...
