VANOISE NATIONAL PARK
Home to France's largest colony of ibex and other animals, Chambéry offers a wide range of activities.
Created in 1963, the Parc national de la Vanoise is France's very first national park. A veritable sanctuary of nature, it stretches from the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys to the Italian border (where it adjoins the Gran Paradiso Park), forming one of Europe's largest protected areas. Here, the mountains reveal themselves in all their majesty: glistening glaciers, high-altitude lakes, flower-filled alpine meadows and peaks topping 3,000 m. Fauna is abundant and conspicuous: ibex (the park's emblem), chamois, marmots, bearded vultures and golden eagles are just some of the encounters possible along the trails. More than 500 km of signposted itineraries allow you to discover this vastness, from family trails around a lake to major alpine crossings for seasoned hikers. In winter, you can explore on snowshoes or cross-country skis, always respecting the tranquillity of the area.
