NOTRE-DAME DE TAMIÉ ABBEY
An abbey, founded in 1132, known for its delicious cheese at Plancherine, a nearby visitor center at 900 m altitude.
Tamié Abbey is a renowned religious site in France, mainly due to its production of quality cheese. Founded in 1132, the abbey currently houses a community of around 25 monks who live according to the rule of Saint Benedict. Due to its spiritual vocation, the abbey does not offer guided tours, but visitors do have the opportunity to buy the famous Tamié cheese, renowned for its creamy texture with a beige paste and firm center, directly on site. The cheese dairy produces around 400 kilos of cheese every day, which is its real source of income. More than half the monks are actively involved in the various stages of production, including milk collection, cheese delivery and management. Tamié cheese is available in two sizes: the Grand Modèle, weighing around 1.5 kg, and the Petit Modèle, weighing around 600 g. Located at an altitude of 900 metres, visitors can buy the cheese at the Centre Saint-Pierre de Tarentaise, which is around 300 metres from the monastery, just past the parking lot. For more adventurous visitors, a short hike up to the monastery offers the opportunity to visit it on arrival. A picnic area is also available. Fort de Tamié offers a splendid panoramic view of the Combe de Savoie. In summer, visitors can also take advantage of a botanical trail to discover the diversity of local plant species.
