Located in the valley of Vauvise, 40 km from Bourges, Sancergues covers an area of 15 km 2 and houses just over 700 inhabitants. Its history begins in the ninth century, with the construction of a church, by Saint August, Archbishop of Bourges. Then, gradually, the rest of the city formed around the church. Sancergues was originally in the seigneury of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, before gaining his independence. Today, the church Saint-Jacques, built in the xiith and thirteenth centuries, replaces the original church. Due to its long construction, this Saint Martin Church combines two architectural styles. You will discover a choir with Romanesque style and a Gothic style nef. Sancergues is located on the road of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostela, to whom it owes its name. For your holidays, Sancergues offers you numerous cultural and sporting activities: conferences and concerts offered by the rural university, heritage visits, fishing, canoeing and other water sports on Vauvise, walking, cycling or riding on the numerous trails around, tennis, or mini golf. For lovers of old stones, the beautiful Augy Castle is also worth a visit. During your walks, in the streets and alleys, you will discover a dodgy, well, beautiful dirty doors, still with their time-beat, and even a drop-out that allows to clean the shoe soles before entering. This beautiful little town is a perfect base for exploring the region, thanks to its tranquility and historical interest, especially since modern developments have not altered its charm.
