Stretching over 2 391 hectares, the municipality of Locmalo surrounds almost all the municipality of Guémené-sur-Scorff. The name Locmalo is an association of the Breton word «loc» - used to designate a place saint - and the name «Malo», one of the seven founding saints of Brittany. The Breton name of the commune is Lokmac'hloù, which is pronounced Lohmalou, the "m" never pronouncing after the "c" or the "k". See, the church of Saint Malo, dedicated to Saint Malo and built at the beginning of the th century by the Vicomtes de Rohan, powerful lords of Guéméné.
