Today a town of just under 3,000 inhabitants, Pléchâtel has a long history of human settlement. Its name dates back to the 9th century, when it was called "Plebs Castel", then "Ploucastellum" and "Ploicastel" before taking on its current name. There are many menhirs and dolmens to discover, as well as the schist cliff known as "Levée", in which caves and staircases have been dug. Before the arrival of the Gauls, menhirs played an important role in the religious life of the population, symbolizing immortality, strength and fertility. The most important of these is the Menhir du Pierre Longue, a 4-m quartz block.
