The name Paimpol comes from penn-ar-poul, meaning "the end of the pond", as the area was once surrounded by ponds. "La Paimpolaise", a famous lament by chansonnier Théodore Botrel, helped make this town of character, emblematic of maritime Brittany, famous. This fame is also due to Pierre Loti and his novel Pêcheur d'Islande, which recounts the saga of the sailors who set sail from Paimpol to fish for cod on the coasts of Newfoundland and Iceland. 2,000 of them never returned, due to shipwrecks and the terrible conditions on board, while the shipowners grew richer.
