Gouarec, Gwareg (curve, in Breton) is located in a green valley on the Nantes Canal in Brest. The artificial section of this canal was built in the first half of the nineteenth century by the workers and peasants and then by the Brest brest, the Spanish and Prussian prisoners who extracted the stones used from the surrounding quarries. This work was commissioned by Napoleon and was aimed at strengthening the river economy. Falling into oblivion from 1924 because of a barge elevator never realized, the lock has been restored and has served since 1963 as river tourism. You will discover its old houses, which give a medieval style to the village, greatly appreciated by English tourists. Marked by a particular architecture, the stones used were once extracted from the surrounding quarries. The same applies to roof slate. Nearby you will find open-air ardoisières, unique in the region.
