Situated on the Belgian border, the village of Haut-Martelange is famous for underground slate quarrying, an activity that began in the late 18th century and declined after the Second World War, until it disappeared altogether. Its largest quarry, Johanna, was in operation between 1898 and 1957. Today, the Luxembourg government is attempting to revitalize this industrial past by developing the former slate quarries. Several stabilization and safety projects have been undertaken (among others) and, since July 2022, visitors have been able to discover an impressive underground circuit.
