South of Lahemaa Park, the Aegviidu and Four Lakes (Nelijärve) region, with its valleys and pine forests, is considered the Switzerland of Estonia; it is a good place for skiing in winter and hiking. A little further away, the Pandivere highlands are home to many rivers that are particularly rich in phosphorus. The region is the place where oil shales are extracted for fuel. Further along the coast, in Sillamäe, there is a former Soviet forbidden zone, which specialises in uranium enrichment and about which many stories are told.
