Located between the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto, Omihachiman is an old trading center which has kept the traces of its history. The Shinmachi Dori district allows you to step back in time and feel the way of life of the merchants of that time, thanks to its heritage, made of beautiful houses and buildings with white walls. Like a small Venice, the city also has canals that served as a means of transportation in the past. Until the middle of the 19th century, the main canal divided the city and its inhabitants, with the samurai on one side and the citizens on the other. The marshy area along the river was recognized as an important cultural landscape in 2006.
