Nestled between Kyoto Prefecture and Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake at 674 square kilometers and 240 kilometers in circumference, Ōtsu is a very accessible destination with plenty of tourist activities. It remained for centuries an important post house on the Tōkaidō route, which connected eastern and western Japan. A former capital before Kyoto (Ōtsu was the capital of the Empire in the seventh century), the city fascinates today with its exceptional material heritage, the Enryaku-ji temple in the lead, and its nature with fabulous landscapes as far as the eye can see. It is also a very relaxing destination, with its hot springs and ryokans, but also sporty.
